3 Signs That Your Brakes Need Fixing

Posted on: 24 August 2016

Are you someone who struggles to take good care of your vehicle? Staying on top of your car maintenance can be difficult to do, especially if you aren't sure of the signs that inform you of defects. Well, neglecting brake repairs when they're needed can be very serious, as not only does this pose escalating issues to your vehicle, but you could also be putting your own safety at risk. So, before you wait any longer, be sure that you know the signs of brake failure, like the following:

Recurring Noises:

Though your brakes may oftentimes have random squeaking, which may be simple and normal wear on the brake pads, if your brake pads are squeaking each time you brake, then this may be a different story. Constantly squeaking usually means the brake pads have hit a very low level, as most brake pads have an indicator that becomes exposed once a certain amount of padding has been shaved off the plate. Because your indicator is made of metal, once it is exposed it will create a grinding and squeaking noise as it runs against your brake rotors. So, be sure to check for consistent grinding or squeaking noises when diagnosing brake problems, as this could be a clear sign your pads need to be replaced.

A Shaking Car When Braking:

It may be a simple indicator if your car shakes when you are braking, but if you don't know what this means then you could definitely be fooled into not taking your car into a repair shop until something more serious is presented. However, waiting should be the last thing you will want to do, as shaking when braking your car could likely mean your brake rotors are warped. Warped rotors are caused when low-padded brake pads scratch and create uneven friction with the rotors, which can cause your rotors to be uneven, making it hard for your brakes to latch onto them when braking. Because this causes conflict with your brake pads, your car may shake as a result of your brake pads trying to latch onto the rotors.

Delayed Braking Response:

A delayed response from your braking could be a sign that your brake fluid either contains bubbles or is simply dirty and is not properly lubricating your braking system. So, if you notice that your brake pads are quickly slowing your car or you are having to press harder than usual on your brake pedal, then consider having a mechanic replace your brake fluid.

So, with the help of these tips, you will be able to know when and for what reason your brakes are failing. This is a great first step of understanding and diagnosing car problems, so you can stay on top of the maintenance and bring your car in to a mechanic before issues potentially worsen. If you want to avoid costly car damages and be certain that your safety is not at risk, be sure to care for your brakes whenever issues like these present.
